san jose. 33 in livermore. and 41 degrees in oakland. by the afternoon, high pressure trying to sneak back in here. that area of low pressure that brought the stormy weather to the bay area yesterday making its way into southern california. so if you are headed that way, be prepared for that. but we are going to see that weak ridge building in and the temperatures going to warm up nicely today. a much milder finish to the day. yesterday it was cold! we had the winds blowing and the temperature in the upper 40s and low 50s. by the afternoon, as much as 11 degrees warmer outside about 60 in concord. 59 degrees in san jose and should stay dry. that's the latest. back to you. >> the winter chill put some snow in sight in the bay area. roberta gonzales made it to the top of mount hamilton in the kpix 5 mobile weather lab. she found several inches on the ground at about 4200 feet above sea level. snow caused problems in the foothills of the sierra.

there was a pile-up in tuolumne county. 100 cars and truck spun out of control in one crash on highway 49. another crash involved about 30 cars. and a tornado. >> we are going to have to hop out and lie in the ditch i hope you know that if it comes towards us. [ laughter ] >> at least she knows what to do, right? the national weather service confirmed that this was a weak one no reports of damage or injuries. other funnel clouds were seen over the sacramento valley but only one is confirmed as a tornado so far. >> an assertive woman. >> she knew what to do. we have to lie in a ditch. >> she did. >> and her husband was gunning right for it. >> hello! we have a couple of accidents beer we're following one on the connector ramp and it could be a bad crash. injuries involved. fire crews. they are calling for two flatbed tow trucks so it sounds like those cars are unmovable

right now. it's on those connector ramps. we think right now it's northbound guadalupe parkway to 280 so expect some delays again, chp heading to the scene trying to confirm exactly what connector ramps around the guadalupe parkway and 280 are blocked. so use 101 or highway 85. this is another crash we're watching northbound 880 approaching oak street. one lane is blocked as you head into downtown oakland. and this is the scene that water main break that ann was talking about powell mason cable car line closed until further notice. they are using buses instead. bart systemwide on time, caltrain and ace trains one and three good to go. back to you guys. >> thank you. defense lawyers for oscar pistorius are stepping up their fight to keep him out of prison as detectives found boxes of testosterone and needleles at the house where his girlfriend was shot to death. tina kraus with the olympian now facing premeditated murder charges. >> reporter: oscar pistorius covered his head with a blanket as he rode back to court in a

police car for day 2 of his bail hearing in south africa's capital. his defense team is trying to keep him out of jail before he goes on trial for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. prosecutors insist the runner is a cold-blooded killer who shot reeva steenkamp after an argument in the early hours of valentine's day. they say a witness heard nonstop shouting coming from pistorius's home before the shooting. the paralympic superstar known as the blade runner for his prosthetic legs says he was not wearing them the night of the killing. but a police detective says the bullets were fired down through the top of pistorius's bathroom door suggesting the athlete was using his artificial legs. pistorius said he thought he was shooting at a robber when he pumped four bullets through the locked door. but when he broke it down with a cricket bat, he realized he had shot steenkamp in the head,

arm and hip. prosecutors tell it differently saying the sprinter took time to put on his prosthetic legs walk across the room and then open fire on steenkamp who was hiding in the bathroom. family and friends buried the supermodel and law graduate on tuesday. pistorius says he was deeply in love with steenkamp and was filled with horror and fear as she died in his arms. tina kraus, cbs news. >> pistorius's lawyers say that the testosterone substance found inside the olympian's bedroom was an herbal remedy not a banned steroid. breaking news now in the east bay. a house on fire outside danville. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is on the scene in the diablo neighborhood with more. what can you tell us? >> >> reporter: that thankfully, the homeowner and his wife are okay. the fire department has it under control.

they got a call around 4:45 this morning. the resident in the home tells me that he and his wife woke up in the middle of the night to the smell of smoke and then they walked to the kitchen window and saw tons of it from the outside. he and his wife got out safely. they called the fire department and were able to respond within a few minutes. they got the fire under control. when i spoke with san ramon valley fire, the biggest concern is because it's a small apartment above a garage they were not able to get as many firefighters inside to fight it but they fought it from the outside. at this point, it is still early in the investigation and they don't know the cause. but right now it's all about mopping it up. the last time i spoke with the battalion chief he said they were trying to get a lot of that smoke that had gathered on the inside or in the inside of the apartment out so they could take a look and assess the damage and salvage some of the property that's inside. but again, at this point, they don't have a cause. i was told an investigator is

on their way to the scene. also we saw pg&e come here, as well. i'm sure they are coming here to turn off any gas or electric just to make sure that everything is okay here. cate caugiran, kpix 5. the coroner is working to identify a body found in san mateo county. a hiker stumbled across the remains at the purisima creek redwoods open space preserve on monday and called the sheriff. officials confirmed the remains were human. in monterey county, officials hope to learn today what caused the death of a 10 month old baby from castro dill. cadaver dogs found her remains in a field near salinas three days after the 10-month-old baby from castro valley was found missing. angel negron was taken by the boyfriend of the mother and he was arrested in los angeles. >> he gave us a general location of where the child might be found. >> a memorial has been set up in the field where the baby was found. city leaders in oakland are

giving the go-ahead to a few more weeks of extra police patrols from the chp. councilmembers voted last night to approve $162,000 to pay for the program for another two months. highway patrol has been supplementing the understaffed oakland police department at no charge since november. the agreement was scheduled to expire february 28. oakland is among several bay area police agencies hiring more officers. that's according to the "san mateo county times" which did a study of 13 bay area departments. it includes san jose, san francisco, and the local chp. it found over the past five years, the number of officers in the departments was reduced by 981. that's a loss of almost 13%. the new hiring is an attempt to get the number of officers back to earlier levels. search crews are still looking through the rubble of a missouri restaurant that was leveled by a natural gas explosion and fire. the blast happened during dinner yesterday evening in a

neighborhood. two bobcats [ cats growling at each other ] imagine seeing this or hearing this in your neighborhood! two bobcats caught on video nearly fighting. this is in carrollton, texas. the cats are staring each other down and growling as you can hear. the homeowners association has warned residents that this is mating season for the cats and to keep pets and kids inside. i don't know if that's the sound of love or -- >> we'll never know. >> or get off my property. >> how about the homeowner that's i think i'll go stand 10 feet away from these mating bobcats and take pictures? >> i would go right back inside! [ laughter ] a trip to the gas station may be part of your next test drive. >> not sure this is a good idea, either. a northern california dealership wants customers now to chip in for the gas they use while test driving a car. sacramento auto sales center is imposing some new requirements before you can go out and test drive one of the cars. the goal is to make sure first you can afford to buy the vehicle you're driving.

another new requirement the car needs to be returned with the same amount of gas it left the lot with. >> how do you do that if you are only going down the street or you know -- >> three or four miles. you will have a calculator. you owe me 89 cents. i'll buy the car across the street. >> he is strange, right? >> nothing is free anymore. >> i guess not. >> ah. >> except traffic. >> except for traffic. that's right. you can get it free here on kpix 5. outside right now we got some metering lights over at the bay bridge. some people going through gas this morning. we have brake lights and it sounds like it's jammed to at least the 880 overcrossing so maybe 15 minutes or so to get you on the bridge. this is just your usual commute. yesterday we saw huge backups through the bay bridge between the rain and we had a couple of stalls on the upper deck kind of a nightmare trying to get there but right now you were good to go all the way across into san francisco. looks good past treasure island. san mateo bridge not too bad here, as well. 14 minutes is the drive time between hayward and foster city. let's go to our maps because we ten to watch this crash and it sounds like it's a noninjury crash which is the good news so they are working to clear it

and we have a confirmed location now. partial ramp closure northbound 280 to southbound guadalupe parkway. so again, there may be some delays in that area. chp is continually reporting it on their chp reports that we check. so there's something going on in that area. you may want to use 101 or highway 85. got some brake lights now through the altamont pass. kcbs mobile 1 drove through there. slowdowns from tracy to vasco road and improving toward the dublin interchange. northbound 880 approaching oak street we have another injury crash here. heading into downtown oakland, and there are some brake lights as far back as 23rd. we'll expect delays in the area. golden gate bridge nod too bad so far heading into san francisco. that's traffic. here's lawrence with a check of your forecast. >> cold around the bay area to start out the day. yesterday's stormy weather even snow on the mountains. now that cold air is left

behind. the clouds are gone. if you head out a chilly start to the day especially in some of the valleys. temperatures below freezing. looks like it is going to warm up as we head into the afternoon. a little milder in the latter part of the day with sunny skies and mostly dry weather on the horizon. high pressure trying to sneak in here. that low that brought you the stormy weather sliding down into southern california to bring them some rain in los angeles and the san diego area. even snow to the mountaintops. high pressure building in slowly dry weather returns but as the ridge builds in we'll see breezy conditions and high clouds continuing to skirt across our skies. traveling around the state you will see snowflakes in the high country watch out for that, 50s into the central valley and 504 degrees partly cloudy into the monterey bay. around our bay we're looking at temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. east bay temperatures also up in the 50s and low 60s. but sunny skies. sunshine, breezy, 58 in san francisco, 50 degrees in sonoma

and what to expect. >> if you come down here later today it's going to look like an angry bee hive. there are over 50 people here stapling glittering painting. if you standstill long enough we are going to decorate you and put you on a float. there's over a mile mylar papers on the floats. we just have waves of snakes and firecrackers, coke bottles, at&t money trees. it's just more things than you can possibly imagine this here. >> it's a cultural lesson as well, right? >> absolutely. everything we do is researched. if it has anything to do with the chinese culture, we have a committee that actually goes over it. much of the culture is like the united states what may mean one thing in maine may mean something different in alabama and we have to get the blend correct. >> putting it together, you go this weekend and then you start planning for next year, right. it's a year-long deal, right?

was very chilly here overnight. there are reports of other outages in nearby neighborhoods as well from the past several hours like fisherman's wharf. >> i got up at 2:20 as i do every day to go to work at 3 p.m. and i went in to brush my teeth and wash my face and there was no water. all i could hear was some bubbles in the background and then i walked down the street and i see this mess all over the place. it was just amazing. >> reporter: not a good way to start the day. water main breaks are common though especially in the winter months. nothing significant about this one according to the crews on scene unless of course you're one of the people who did wake up without water. not a good start to the day when you can get that morning shower. now, the other thing that this is affecting is the cable car line. the mason powell line they have a bus bridge going so they don't have to bring the cable cars through the area because they are expecting heavy equipment to arrive this morning. i know elizabeth is updating

you on that this morning. anne makovec, kpix 5. >> she was one that didn't have water today. okay, anne, thank you. 6:33. it was the smell of smoke that awoke an east bay couple, their house was on fire and kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is in it the diablo neighborhood near danville with this developing story. good morning, cate. >> reporter: good morning, frank. the good news is that the fire is out. and the people who are inside when it started are okay. the focus is going to be too figure out how this whole thing started in the first place. san ramon valley fire say they got a call around 4:45 this morning to an apartment near the diablo country club. the fire started in the apartment above the garage. the man who says he lives here says him and his wife woke up confused to the smell of smoke. you see the fire. thank god it's not start in the kitchen. because started in the kitchen, we couldn't have gotten out. >> reporter: the battalion chief says the biggest challenge for the firefighters was the size of the apartment. it was really small. firefighters had a hard time getting inside and maneuvering around that. again, at this point, they still don't have a cause and i actually was just walking to the live shot and found an investigator is on scene. they will be taking a look and doing a preliminary investigation to determining again how this whole thing started in the first place. reporting live in danville, cate caugiran, kpix 5. boy, did we have a wacky weather day yesterday or what? >> no kidding, a mixed bag, rain, snow, tornadoes, hail. >> everything. >> it was wonderful. folks who like dry weather, it's back. dry day but chilly. it's looking good as it looks like high pressure is going to sneak back into the bay area. the temperatures are a bit cold though. 33 degrees in concord, 30 in santa rosa, livermore checking in just above freezing at 33 degrees and actually the napa valley dropped to 28. colt start to the day. we have patchy frost out there, as well. that area of low pressure that brought stormy weather headed to southern california to bring rain and snow. and high pressure sneaks in causing some dry weather to return to the bay area and temperatures will be much warmer by the afternoon. highs in the upper 50s into the south bay probably 50s and maybe low 60s into parts of the east bay under mostly sunny skies and inside the bay today you will find 50s and 60s. the weather is looking nice the next few days. back to you. >> thank you.

that winter chill put snow in sight in the bay area. they had several inches on top of mount hamilton. this is just east of san jose. that's at 4200 feet above sea level. kpix 5's roberta gonzales made it to the top and did a few snow angels there and may it with the kpix 5 mobile weather lab. and she found some guys who had reached the summit on bicycle. >> well, we just decided to go camping last night and we didn't know it was going to be this snowy. we were expecting to come across a little but it turned into a little more than we were expecting. >> the snow was above 2500 feet. below that, there was rain around the bay area with some spots getting nearly an inch yesterday. >> it was a crazy day. and the national weather service confirms it was a weak tornado that touched down near red bluff in the sacramento valley yesterday. >> this fricking tornado, we are going to have to hop out and lie in the ditch, i hope you know that, if it comes towards us. >> there were no reports of damage or injuries. other funnel clouds were seen over the sacramento valley but

only one has been confirmed as a tornado so far. snow is flying over the grapevine between the san joaquin valley and l.a. this morning. they have just shut down interstate 5. if you are heading south, take note. a winter storm warning is in effect in the area until 10:00. you don't think in l.a. you'll hit snow but over the mountains -- >> i know. >> -- you get it hard. with more on that, let's check in with elizabeth. >> they just issued that sig alert within the first few minutes. southbound i-5 closed at grapevine and northbound is closed at parker road. in the bay area, we have our own problems now. northbound 880 approaching oak street. we have an injury crash blocking one lane. and a member of the kcbs phone force says it's stacked up from at least high street. past hegenberger expect brake lights. consider 580 as an alternate. to the maps and other live traffic cameras. this accident is clearing.

they had to call out two flatbed tow trucks to clear that ramp between northbound 280 and southbound 87. so now everything is flowing nicely across downtown san jose. as anne makovec mentioned that powell mason cable car line is down in san francisco's north beach neighborhood. there's a water main break in the area so they are having to use shuttle buses instead. still no estimated time when they are going to get the cable cars back up and running. in the meantime everything else mass transit-related bart, caltrain, ace train number 3 so far on time. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. lawyers for oscar pistorius are questioning the relevance of testosterone found inside his bedroom. pistorius is charged with murder of reeva steenkamp. his lawyers say the testosterone found in the bedroom was an herbal remedy, not a banned steroid. under cross-examination, a detective acknowledged that one of the witnesses who claimed to have overheard an argument at the house before the shooting was about a quarter mile away. new this morning, the chp

will keep providing extra officers to oakland. the city council last night voted to approve more than $160,000 to continue the program for another 60 days. chp has been supplementing the understaffed oakland police department at no charge since last november. the agreement was scheduled to end at the end of the month. people in one oakland hills neighborhood have come up with their own plan to deal with the city's understaffed police force. >> well, they are actually paying for private security patrols out of their own pockets. 62 households will each pay about 60 bucks a month for one guard patrol half mile radius in the oakmore area of oakland. the smaller police force has led to a rise in home burglaries, according to the neighbors. >> i would say the last six months that it feels like it's gotten noticeably worse in this neighborhood. >> some have criticized the mayor jean quan who does live in the oakmore neighborhood. private patrol is expected to begin in about a week. the white house is poised to strike back against cyberattacks. the obama administration will

announce new sanctions this afternoon to stop countries that support hackers who steal american trade secrets. this is after a report that the chinese military is behind an ongoing plot to hack u.s. companies and government offices. the chinese government denies it's involved in cyberespionage. security breach at apple. the company says hackers targeted a small number of laptops with malicious software. facebook had a similar problem last week. the attacks used a weakness in the java plug-in for web users to infect the computers. to avoid it type of hacking, the department of homeland security recommended last month that user disable java on web browsers. how much is the most expensive drink at starbucks? the answer and what's actually inside that drink. coming up. >> plus, nothing but net. the slam-dunking otter that has become a viral hit. >> and let's check in on the market opened up about 10 minutes ago take a quick peek at the early numbers on this

we had stormy weather yesterday and snow in the mountains. things settling down. patchy frost in the valleys even out at the coastline some reports of some frost this morning. by the afternoon, it will be a much milder afternoon as compared to yesterday as these temperatures will be about 10 to 11 degrees warmer. and then mostly dry weather it looks like now ahead. that area of low pressure that brought the stormy weather yesterday is sliding down into southern california bringing them some rain and some snow across the mountains. a weak ridge of high pressure trying to build into the bay area just strong enough to help clear us out and dry our conditions out. but we'll see a few high clouds occasionally wrapping over the top of the ridge moving into bay area skies. no delays at sfo. a clear start to the day. the possibility of some thunderstorms there. we have a mix of sun and clouds of rain and some snow expected

right before the island. to our maps. 880 in oakland. approaching the oak street exit. we have brake lights now as far back as high street. and continuing to grow. so expect delays in those northbound lanes of 880. consider using 580 instead. a quick check of the south bay if we have time for this near that interchange of 280 and the guadalupe parkway. that's a check of traffic. back to you guys. >> parking at san francisco giants home games is about to get more expensive. starting march 4, metered evening parking will take effect near at&t park. for games and events it will cost $7 an hour. the idea is to discourage people from circling the area and reduce congestion.
